Not everybody has the income to give to charities as much as they would like, so it’s great to find programs that allow you to give back with things you already have. The Bra Recyclers will take your used good condition bras and distribute them to women and girls who really need them. From their About Us Page:
Shelters and transitional housing facilities receive request on a daily basis for basic clothing items, but there is a special need for bras. Think about a woman who is forced to leave an abusive situation in the middle of the night with just the clothes on her back. The last thing on her mind is to grab a bra, her primary concern is getting to a safe place.
The Bra Recyclers® would like to do our part to assist deserving women with a recycled bra. A portion of all bras will be distributed to women’s shelters, transitional housing and to support groups for breast cancer support survivors.
All you have to do is wash the bras you’d like to donate, fill out a form, and mail them to the address provided. Or if you live in Arizona, Dallas, TX or Sacramento, CA, you can just drop your bras off at these locations.
I’m already going through my bra drawers. I have so many bras that are in perfect condition but I just don’t wear them anymore. Instead of having them continue to collect dust, I’m happy to donate them and put them in the hands of women who need them much more than I do.
As you may already know, tomorrow is National Wear Red Day (according to GoRedForWomen.org.) Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women in the U.S and this organization is striving to reduce that statistic. We really like that this campaign has specific goals that they’re working towards every day. Short term, they hope to see a 25% reduction in coronary heard disease and stroke by the end of the year. That’s pretty ambitious and we applaud them for it.
The thing about heart disease, is that it’s often preventable. There are many life style changes women can make to reduce their risk of getting it. The earlier you start being mindful of your heart health, the less likely you’ll be to fall victim to this disease.
Here are a few key ways the organization lists to help you can start protecting your heart:
- Physical Activity. Think walking, jogging, cycling or dancing with someone you love
- Healthy Diet. Think whole grains, delicious fresh fruits and more
- Reduce Stress. Think of taking time for your favorite hobby or celebrating your “unbirthday” with your best friend.
- Quit Smoking. Think about saving the money you’re spending on tobacco for a fun family trip.
So wear red tomorrow if you have it. If not, it doesn’t really matter – how about we all just pledge to take care of our hearts now and for the future?
As many of you already know, a very special commercial will be airing during the Super Bowl this year which features Pam Tebow, mother to Heisman-winning football player Tim Tebow, taking about her decision to not have an abortion during her complicated pregnancy. And yay! Everything worked out for her and now she’s got this super famous and rich son! Woo-hoo!
The debate over this commercial should have nothing to do with beliefs. If you are pro-life, great. If you are pro-choice, super. The problem with this commercial is two-fold: 1) It insinuates that the opposite of Pam Tebow’s belief is pro-abortion. NOBODY is ever PRO abortion and it’s unfair to even hint at that; 2) Both sides are not presented in this argument. And despite what anyone says about the decision to air this commercial, it IS an argument with two opposing sides. Such a delicate and critical debate requires opportunities for both sides to be heard in the media, not just one. read more…
You know how all those peeps out there believe if we reverse Roe v. Wade, the world would suddenly become a magically wonderful place with lollipops and rainbows? Okay, not really, but there’s a great number of people who believe that reversing that decision and banning abortions would be for the better and end abortions altogether.

We should look to Ireland for ideas on this discussion. The Guardian reports that the Irish government is catching major heat lately to overturn their current abortion ban because of accusations that it was exposing women to major lies and falsehoods about the procedure. read more…
Politics are a tricky beast. Promises about anything and everything are easily made on the campaign trail but are many times stifled once said politician lands in a place of power.

Cindy McCain has lent her face to the increasingly popular NOH8 campaign—a movement originated by a gay rights group against California’s proposition 8, a law banning same-sex marriage. Her daughter Meghan McCain has also come out in support of gay marriage. John McCain however was opposed to gay marriage on the presidential campaign trail and remains so, according to a statement released by his office in response to Cindy’s NOH8 photo endorsement. Oh, to be a fly on the wall in the McCain house during a family dinner.
While we have the utmost respect for any well-known celebrity (especially those in the political world) coming out in favor of gay rights, we can’t help but be a bit suspicious. This move comes on the heels of President Obama coming under fire from the LGBT community in the last few months for his side-stepping various human rights issues. In addition to not supporting gay marriage in general (something he said he did back in 1996), he has also failed to repeal the absolutely wretched “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”—a policy that most Americans agree should be repealed and something that would seemingly not create many negative consequences for his future political career. read more…
Scientists in London think that there really may be a fountain of youth after all. It’s called being born female. A UK Times Online article suggests that women have the potential to live to age 120 thanks to advances in healthcare and some lucky genetics. Here are some of the findings:
- Think 40 is middle age? Not so fast. Apparently knowledge of healthcare doubles every year – so our life expectancy keeps going up as more and more advances occur. According to author Patrick Dixon, “In the five years between 2045 and 2050, there are likely to be more advances than we have seen in the past 25 years.”
- Luckily for us, many deadly illnesses that affect women (think breast cancer) can now be detected early and have a greater chance of being treated successfully. It’s thought that men, on the other hand, are more prone to fatal conditions due to their high testosterone levels.
- Our baby-making ability seems to help us stay healthier than men also. Professor Thomas Kirkwood, director of the Institute for Ageing and Health at Newcastle University says, “There is some evidence that female cells are better protected against this accumulation of faults than men. There are evolutionary reasons why this should be so, because the maintenance of the female body plays such a central role in our reproductive process.”
- We’re happier! Women are naturally more sociable and we form deeper, more positive connections with others. This helps our health and well-being as we age.
So what are you going to do with the extra time you didn’t know you had? We just hope our 401Ks will last us the extra decades!
By now, most of you have heard the absolutely disgusting comments Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh have made in regards to the absolute tragedy in Haiti that is still going on.

(We hate your face and if we could make this picture any smaller than it already is, we would have)
We’re not interested in giving either of them any more limelight than they already receive but for those who don’t know, TV evangelist (and total dickhead) Pat Robertson suggested that this devastating earthquake was caused by the fact that Haiti made a “pact with the devil” a long time ago and now they’re cursed. God is punishing them.
Ohhh, of COURSE. Silly us, we thought it had something to do with plate tectonics and seismic pressure but clearly this was the vengeful God’s doing. Let us not forget that Pat Robertson also suggested that the 9/11 tragedy was God punishing us because of all the abortionists, feminists and gays in the world. Nothing like spinning a tragedy for your own benefit, you absolute piece of shit. read more…
We’ll say it straight out—the idea of working from home sounds like a little piece of paradise. It sounds like an even bigger paradise when we peer into our crystal balls of the future and think about being married and having a kid to take care of—while also continuing to bring in some additional income for our family.

That’s not to say that we think working at home is a breeze. We’re aware it’s not all Bon-Bons and soap operas. We’re also aware that it requires a greater capacity for focus in order to ignore the daily distractions that may surround you in your house. However, we’d personally take that in a heartbeat over dealing with frustrations like commuting, arriving back home at a late hour, bad weather, etc. Wouldn’t most people agree with us?
The NY Times Magazine published an article this past weekend which seems to agree with just that point of view. However, the writer chose to take a more feminist slant with it, stating that working from home is especially beneficial for women who might find telecommuting a slightly easier option in terms of combining work-work with home-work (picking up kids from school, cooking, cleaning, etc.) read more…
