Women Spend Too Much Time On Facebook

A new study conducted by Crowd Science finds that almost twice as many females over 21 than males admit that they spend too much time using social media - Facebook included.  More stats from this survey include:

  • More women regret things they have posted online than men.
  • 34% of females who use social media said it was their favorite leisure activity verses only 10% of males.
  • 45% of females believe that most people are interested in what they have to say on social media vs 29% of males

We find this study disturbing mainly because we tend to believe that Facebook is made of pure evil. Sure, both Girl C and I have Facebook accounts (is there anybody who can’t say the same these days?) but we are constantly complaining about them. We loathe status updates. Nobody cares if you’re going to the bakery to buy red velvet cake to bring to your sister’s house-warming party on Long Island. We also hate the extremely personal (and often way TMI) posts users scatter throughout their pages. And the loser Farmville and Mafia Wars games that litter our newsfeeds….seriously guys? The recent privacy setting changes aren’t helping the social media giant’s case either.

Why are women more obsessed with the site than men? We’re not entirely sure, but we do know we tend to  be a bit noisier than our male counterparts. We like to know what’s going on in other people’s business. Some of us women really do live for gossip and Facebook puts all our “friends” gossip right on our front page as soon as we log in. The problem is many Facebook users get way to personal when updating their pages which can lead to catastrophic real-life repercussions. We’ve seen it happen ourselves – friendships ruined, important secrets unveiled, job security threatened – all from unnecessary posts on Facebook.  Why are we risking important things like this  just to update our pages?  This, among many other reasons is why we hate Facebook more and more every day.

That being said we can’t seem to bring ourselves delete our own accounts just yet – but we’re getting there! Somehow as much as we loathe the majority of what we see every time we log in – we can’t seem to make the plunge. Are we really afraid of losing touch with all of our “friends” on there – or are we just as addicted to this site as the majority of women surveyed seem to be? Feel free to send letters of encouragement to us at: girlhatedotcom{@}gmail{dot}com as we attempt to quit this thing for the 15th time this year…
